PERHAPS I’VE STRUCK A NERVE

I must remember
that a nerve
splays into many tiny branches.

So maybe it might be all right,
according to my hunches,
that there’s one mere ember
of my fire
still lighting
this same, once-straight path,

though it be hard to recognize
in these dwindling days of winter
with its many unexpected curves.
