Exercise your voice. . .

make it heard. . .
make it strong–

even if that comes to mean
there will be ones
who think you make
far too much noise. . .

Start out exactly where
and how you are–

and speak and sing,
for, though at first,
you may not be a star,

in the course of practicing,
ever clearer, louder,
cleaner and more resonant
it starts to ring,

and the world gets
somehow better
for the presence
of your spirit
and your letters,

because you’ve taken up the dare
and everyone you reach
will be a better worker
and a better player,
for everything
the sounds you make
come through to teach,

just because
you upped and made that choice.
