SEND IT UP THE FLAGPOLE

Why not
just send it up the flagpole–
and see if anyone salutes?

For, like a goose lost in its gaggle,
the most deft-worked beauteous flag
kept furled
and ever stowed in some low flag hole,

its grace and strength will not be seen
and the actual fact of it existing
will be
for too much of the world
a point that’s merely moot.
